Training In The Scottish Mountains

Training for Everest Base Camp and Kilimanjaro

Rugged, rocky, snow covered mountain — The Buachaille
Looking down on Glencoe and across at The Buachaille in winter

The rugged mountains of Scotland are an excellent Training Ground in terms of terrain for some of the biggest mountain treks around the world.

In and around Aviemore you can find routes comparable to the notorious, Nepali Flat found in the Himalayas. In the Cairngorm Plateau in summer you can walk across terrain similar to the Shira Plateau on Kilimanjaro. Climbing Ben Vane near Loch Lomond with its rocky scrambling will prepare for the Barranco Wall on Kilimanjaro.

In my article, 6 Scottish routes to prepare you for high mountain treks, I discuss routes in Scotland with terrain comparable to that found in the Himalayas and Kilimanjaro. I also discuss how to prepare for summit nights on the high mountain treks.
